I just want to start a discussion about why we participate in the UN. I am not negative towards the UN, but i don´t wish to be a member just because it´s "the thing to do" What are the benfits? Do we influence politics in totalitarian and capitalistic states? Or is it they who influence us? Who dominates the UN? (and therby presses legislation down our throats) Is it a reasonable tradeoff to accept this legislation in return for influence on global scale politics?? Should we consider starting an NS workers international, with revolutionary, anti war andlibertanian goals?? I hope this can be the start of a constructive debate.. Sincerly yours, the council of global affairs, FNR...

You are right to raise concerns, I have them myself, however, a good side is that you can make UN proposals or try to stop those that threaten human rights.
I've had my doubts about the UN myself.

Yeah, the UN's a tricky one. From a strict anarcho-puritan point of view, we definitely shouldn't participate.
Most of the recent resolutions have been either good or at least innocuous though.
And it certainly makes the game more interesting.

I can't stand the NSUN. Most of the resolutions which are not complete bullshit are ill-thought-through liberal bollocks.
I've hardly bothered to vote on resolutions for the last few months.
However, the reason S&V stays a member of the UN is because it validates a "nation" as not being a mere puppet. Too many players have too many different states and play having different opinions with them.
That's ok if that's the way they want to play but as far as I'm concerned S&V carrying a UN badge means it represents where I want to go with the game and the ideas I want to explore with other people of similarish views.
I don't really want to waste time with puppet players. I have one at the moment, The Murder Bird, which exists solely to hold the Anarchism region in existence when I migrated here. Previously I had one which was solely for historical roleplay (the state before Sacco and Vanzetti) and another which was not so much a puppet as an experiment in three anarchists/libertarians sharing one state. (That ended either because CACE throttled it or because I got pissed off with CACE, depending on your point of view).

Its seems a lot of our discussions lately are trying to navigate the differences between the game mechanics, NS world politics, real world ideals, and real world realities.
In the case of the NS-UN I have to agree with S&V about the puppet issue.
Similarly, I think it does provide a useful focal point for the game and so I kind of like it for that. Most of the proposals are stupid but I like the fact that the arguments tend to turn into rediculous prejudice versus legalistic nit-picking. Its kind of amusing if you stay back from it. Finally, the things it does to my nation, I think, keep my utopianism in check in ways that are amusing enough. The enforcement of bad legislation gives me a foil to RP what is going wrong in my paradise? Why do my citizens think nuclear terrorism is a problem? I guess its becuase they really do like those satellite feeds from the capitalist states! So what am I going to do about it? Perhaps I should launch an alternative satellite feed with a few example of what good socialist pop culture might look like...you get the idea...

I just think the NSUN is a bit of fun really. It's not really compatable with strict anarcho-communism and most of the resolutions are nonsense but it gets people talking and interacting with other nations whose opinions they might not share. It seems to bring the region together more.
I think I only really started getting involved in the game after I joined the UN. Also without joining, the game can be a bit dull just passing all that legislation...
