Description: UN Resolution #59: The 40 Hour Workweek (Category: Social Justice; Strength: Significant) shall be struck out and rendered null and void.
Argument: Individuals should have the right to choose how many hours a week they want to work without interference from the United Nations.
The consequences of Resolution #59 are the opposite of the aims. The resolution actually increases income inequality as it is often the typically low paid poor who work longer hours to make up for the gap in income with the higher paid workers and thus has further consequences of decreasing basic welfare.

[delegate bias] This would be a fucking shame to vote to repeal. Too many of my idols put their lives on the line for this. [/bias]

sorry to have to clarify, but do you mean a shame to vote against the repeal of the 40 hour week, or a shame to vote against the 40 hour week?
this one's a tad confusing, it seems nice to give people the choice, but a choice without a reasonable alternative is not much outside of coercion. i suppose i can always RP that my citizens don't need a 40 hour work week, 'cause we've got a 30 hour non-compulsory work week or something. i'd love to hear other people's thoughts on this before voting.

I don't think it really matters for any of the countries here - no-one's likely to be forcing workers to work more than 40 hours (if we even have 'work' at all). The point of UN resolutions is more to make sure other, shall we say, less progressive, nations can't fuck over their people. Also, the 40HWW resolution actually allows workers to work up to 80 hours, they just can't be contractually obliged to do more than 40. So it effectively takes power from the bosses and gives it to the workers. I'd urge everyone to vote against the repeal. [Of course, I'm not actually in this region, so I haven't voted in the poll. Feel free to ignore me ] There's some discussion of this going on in the NSAnarchism forums - feel free to join in.

As Port Watson is actually an overseas enclave of the Anarchist Federation of Free Soviets, feel free to ask for any clarification on the original 40 Hour Workweek resolution you'd like. We, of course, would love to see this region and every nation in it votes against this repeal. Remember Haymarket!
