Democracy over human rights?

a few days ago i got this clever issue on Nationstates.

i think many of you have also got the same issue, it was about the introducing of death penalty. it said that a conservative politician is running to get capital punishment reintroduced and that majority was supporting him. then you could choose to go with the death penalty or go agains the people with banning it.

that really made me think because there wasn't a clear answer. i think both answers were bad because i, as a anarcho-socialist or anarcho-syndicalist, think that the government shouldn't rule the people but the other way around. anyway introducing the death penalty is sick in my opinion.

i then went with introducing the death penalty and that made my nation's political freedoms reduce from 'world benchmark' to 'excessive'

so what would you have chosen? any thoughts?

(btw, whee, i finally registered to the forums. now how could i make a poll about this thing?)

oh, well that's logical. because if you let the people to decide bad things too isn't that political freedom? but then i would maybe go with reducing my civil rights then because i think it's breaking the civil rights of a country if death penalty is in action.

well i think that this issue was really good because it wasn't so that i couldn't have agreed with one of them. it was just so that it really made me think what i value more. anyway, i think i would also (i haven't had the reason to do it yet) dismiss if all the opinion are majorily different from my own opinion.

do you know where i could see the list of the scores like which is the most this and that and what is in the middle?

anyway, i don't want to forget the idea of this thread which was to make people think about their priorities. the well-being of the society or its democracy? i think most of the people are here going to choose democracy (although i bet most of all the people wouldn't) but it would be nice to hear opinions.

I'd vote against it because murder is destructive and pointless.
If most people said we should wipe out minorities, would you agree in the name of 'democracy'?

of course that's the same way i feel. i would always go against it if somebody asked my opinion. but an anarchist society wouldn't be one if the rules were coming from the top. now would it? if that would really be happening in the anarchist country i would "rule" (i have maybe a little bit different views of anarchism than the majority), then, i would have to accept it as the people's will but i would also seriously protest against it and try to persuade the people for banning it.

the game of nation states isn't set up to be played as an anarchist state. Someone makes the rules. With that in mind:

conservative politicians wouldn't exist in an anarchist state and if they did no-one would believe anything they said anyway, howcome you choose to?

yea i know you can't really play an anarchist state in this game. unfortunately, but well, what would there be to play then?

anyway i have tried to take it as a more of a roleplaying game and i have tried to forget the restrictions and just try to get my nation to be as close to my real dreams of a perfect republic as possible.

so i just ignored the facts that it was a conservative politician and bla bla bla i just wondered what i would do if some crazy guy would have gotten the majority of the people become crazy so that they would ask for such a crime to be legal.

i think this game is a great entertainment, it's a self study for me, and i get to discuss important matters with other nice fellows. i've found it really valuable for my political thoughts since i've been thinking of writing a book of my republic (ehheh) and this game keeps me thinking about the organization of the society. i think it's really productive entertainment since if i did other funny things they would conquer my thoughts. now i can have fun and be creative in my thinking. after all i've thought to make a career in politics, if i get lucky, that is .

you know i have this vision of the greatest society i could think of, it's a mixture of anarchism and socialism, and this game has helped me to develop my thoughts.

soooo.... i just try to see those issues that could be problems in my nation, and that's the funniest and most developing part when they get even hard for me to choose the right choice.


another really difficult one was about eating the national animal. i think animals are to be eaten, i mean, at least everybody should have the right to eat meat if they so wish, but on the other hand, i would like to respect the nature too...it was tough. anyway i went with the capitalist marketing and decided to make it a business.
the funny part was that my national animal is Human. it became really hilarious, i can show you a screenshot if you wish.
